For the past few months, the Bomber has been pretty much getting himself dressed in the morning (which is a huge help), except for his shoes. One obvious problem is that he can't tie them himself, but even on the hook & loop or slip-on shoes, he has trouble figuring out which shoe goes on which foot. So every morning for the last few months, he's gotten himself completely undressed out of his jammies, and completely dressed into his clothes (with the obligatory "I'm naked" appearances in our room in between), and then reappears holding his shoes asking which one goes on which foot. Rather than tell him, I've been trying to teach him the visual clues that can help him figure it out for himself.
Last week he came in, sandals in hand, demanding to know which one went on which foot.
"You know." I told him, pointing to my ankles, "The buckles go on the outside of your foot."
"NO MOMMY! Which foot does this shoe GO ON!"
Since we'd had this conversation about the buckles a dozen times already, I was starting to get frustrated. "I'm not going to tell you, kiddo. I told you how to tell which is which, now you need to use your brain and some logic to figure it out."
"I don't HAVE any logic in my brain!" he wailed.
Fast forward to this morning, when he got himself all dressed and came running in with one sandal on the correct foot. "Look Mommy! I got my shoe on the right foot!"
"That's great, kiddo! How did you figure it out?" I asked.
"I guess my brain is getting full of logic!"
If that's true, you're way ahead of a lot of people, my boy.
