The Bomber has this friend - let's call him the Birdman. The Birdman is a nice kid and a good friend to the Bomber. They've known each other since they were tiny and over the years have developed that kind of friendship where their minds and plans and ideas meet and mesh more often than they don't. Whenever they get together, they fall almost immediately into this great little partnership of boy stuff.
The Bomber and the Birdman are both pretty smart kids with inquisitive minds and brains full of ideas and information. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the two of them someday took over the world, or at least a small South American country. I hope they're working on their evil genius laughs.
Anyway, Saturday morning the Bomber and the Birdman were in my kitchen when the Birdman proposed a hypothesis - if your head can fit through an opening, your whole body can fit through. The Bomber immediately proposed they test this hypothesis and after two brief experiments (because no good scientist would ever rely on an N of 1), they declared it proved. (I'm actually not so sure this is a valid conclusion, since my hips are a LOT wider than my head, but I guess if you're a couple of stick-skinny 6 year old boys, it's true).
So what prompted this scientific investigation? Well, confronted with a locked door and out-of-reach keys, the boys decided they'd try an alternative method of entrance to the back porch:
Unfortunately for them, after they'd proved their hypothesis, they decided it was too much trouble to go back in the way they came out, and ran around to the front yard, where the Birdman's mother and I were chatting. And like all great visionaries, their scientific exploration was not appreciated when it was first presented to the masses.
Someday, perhaps, the world will come to understand their genius. In the meantime, they had to sit in time out. I wonder if that ever happened to Galileo or Pythagoras.
Actually, Galileo spent the last years of his life under house arrest for heresy, so I'm thinking time out is the equivalent to house arrest as far as a little boy is concerned.
